FLORESTA is a series of photographs that intrigue and enchant through a dense and sublime floral language. Ruiz has captured here rich, generous, and tropical flowers. This nature, brimming with sap and life, portrays the lush and mysterious beauty of his native Argentina. Not without the nostalgia of exile, these blooms evoke a memory of his Paraná, a border river between the wild world of the tropical forest and the civilised world of Buenos Aires. Melancholic, tribal, symbolic, and totemic, the photographs of Max Ruiz were produced by Maison Picturale in large format on fine art watercolour paper and brush-printed using an original, non-toxic process based on nacre, pine resin, lamp black, and gelatin. From the subdued atmosphere of the studio-gallery emerges both Floresta — Max Ruiz's childhood village — and the vanished era of pictorialist photography.
