Les Sages is a quiet tribute to the vegetal memory of forests — to those standing beings, rooted in the depths of time, whose silent presence spans the ages. Developed from large-format photographs by Denis Félix, the images are materialised by Tristan Sidem and Raphaël Lebas de Lacour at Maison Picturale using the oxydotype process: a photographic print craftsmanship where each piece is unique. The artist, like a geologist of the sensible, makes an incision into the density of the living. The plant seems frozen in stone, as if the sap had found refuge in the mineral.
The Process
The oxydotype is an extremely subtle photographic print craftsmanship, developed by Tristan Sidem and Raphaël Lebas de Lacour at Maison Picturale. This organic print is based on an adjusted resinotype on glass with controlled copper oxidation on the back, giving each piece unique tones ranging from deep ochre to verdigris. The glass plate, a noble and unalterable support, receives a layer of pigmented photosensitive resin that forms the image, while the copper on the back slowly oxidises to reveal a living mineral palette. Each oxydotype is a unique piece — the alchemy between light, resin, and copper never reproduces identically.
